Sony announced two new lenses for its high performance Carl Zeiss and G Series, the SAL1635ZA and SAL70400G. The SAL1635ZA, Vario Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Series Lens, is well-suited for landscape, snapshot and indoor photography. It offers the utmost flexibility in challenging lighting conditions due to its wide f/2.8 constant aperture. The SAL70400G, 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G Series Lens, is a 5.7x super telephoto zoom lens and is designed to deliver extremely sharp descriptive performance across its wide focal length range, it is ideally suited for sports, action and wildlife photography. The Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA and 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G lens.
The Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 lens does well vs. other professional quality ultra-wide lenses on the market within the same focal range. As stated however, the lens isn’t perfect based on its 16mm performance, but it is well within means for easy corrections of normal abberations. Extreme corner performance however might leave something to be desired, but at the end of the day you can at least rest assured you purchased the finest wide angle zoom available on the market today for your Alpha.
The standard that the Sony Zeiss Zooms are setting is commendable, clearly intended to compete at the highest level for zoom lens technology in the industry. Not only do they meet or exceed the demands of todays high resolution DSLR’s but it is of my opinion they will meet the demands of DSLR’s well into the future (just in case resolution demand continues to climb in the full frame category). Overall the Sony Zeiss 16-35mm performs almost flawlessly on an APS-C sensor, with no complaints from me at any focal length. On a full frame sensor such as the A900′s, it out performs any ultra wide angle lens available to the Alpha Mount today, and competes well with other manufacturers offerings at, or near, the same focal length.
For those who really need the best equipment (despite its flaws), you can probably stomach the cost of this lens without much of an issue. For those who need to save money in order to purchase this lens (put me in that category), it will be hard to swallow the cost initially. Yet in the end it will probably be worth your investment merely knowing you will have the best lens available to you in this category. You certainly get what you pay for and if you want the best, you have to pay for the best
